After a recent English camp one our teachers remarked:
What problem were you facing that S2Ssolved?
I was near broke and they gave some valuable work that paid well.
What was your English camp experience like?
The students in the English Camp I taught were more motivated to learn than the high school students I usually teach and therefore it was much easier and less draining to impart the knowledge I have to give them.
I get energized when it’s obvious my students are learning what I have to teach, and that was the exchange that happened in this camp.
Were you pleasantly surprised by any part of your experience with S2S?
Yes,the accommodation provided far exceeded my expectations, it was great and comfortable.
What did you find remarkable about S2S?
That once I finally got hired by you and arrived I was immediately compensated with an advance on arrival to cover the expenses I’d incurred in getting there.
Also, my co-workers were very cooperative and everyone worked as a team without reservation to get the job done, and everything flowed quite smoothly in that regard.
What is the most important thing people should know about S2S?
That despite all the hassles getting the job and getting there, once you’re actually there you’re more or less taken care of quite well.
What part of your experience with S2S makes you want to work with
us again?
The compensation is much better than working with other outfits in the short term.
Have you ever heard of people teaching English as a foreign language as their job? There are many native speakers, that is, those from UK, USA, Australia etc that earn good salaries here in Thailand doing just that while having less than half the outgoings that they’d have in their own country, especially in the UK!
I arrived 2 years ago in Bangkok at age 50, floundered for a while then found my first teaching job.
Initially I taught small groups of post-graduate students, later, larger groups, basic conversational English. Oddly enough I found my first students by chatting to Thais in the elevator at my condo, (they couldn’t escape my sales pitch!).
However I prefer to teach in colleges so soon made the move..aided by a good agency as I didn’t fancy turning up on the door of 20 different schools explaining in my (still) less than perfect Thai that I wanted a job!
Incidentally, a knowledge of the Thai language isn’t necessary but is helpful eventually. Don’t worry it will be absorbed..like osmosis!
If you wish to have a more structured classroom style experience – and far less ‘running around and organising your time’ the government schools are always looking for English teachers.
Problem being some schools have the tendency to change contracted hours, or be late with salary payments etc…this is all avoided if everything is clear from the beginning.
Private schools, the ‘International’ ones, pay a better rate but usually (not always) require more experience and greater input to the school day so you may be at school from 7.30 am until 5pm,with shorter holidays than the government schools, though with better salary.
Many problems can be avoided by using a good agency – English speaking naturally- who will (for a percentage of your salary), place you in a suitable school or college, check accommodation and clarify contract points, which will all be in English. This is especially useful as deciphering the Thai contract isn’t easy.
Hours worked per week vary but 18-23 seems average and salaries, in 2013, are in the region of 30,000baht upwards,($900 per month)
Many job sites are available online if you wish to chase one particular job, at a particular school or college, but many choose an agency which will also offer greater choice and also supply work during the rather long Thai holidays, in paid programmes of English camps and Seminars etc ..
This was taken during a lesson planning session at Thai college.
The qualifications required are a recognised degree, a TOEFL or similar certificate and recent teaching experience, though often lesser qualifications suffice. Contact us for the latest ‘news’ regarding qualifications.
Supply and demand dictate this, but problems obtaining work permits without qualifications can be an irritation, and it’s illegal.
When making your choice of where to teach, bear in mind that a perfectly acceptable ‘street’ meal is 50baht (or less), a month’s condo rental is 3-8,000baht and your salary goes a long way, though only in Thailand or S.E Asia.
If you need the experience and positive impact on your resume/CV, and life, that a teaching job in Thailand offers. I’d go for it now.
